Geology Underset Limestone with erratic blocks of fell sandstone.
Record Name Addlebrough Summit. Cup marked stone cairn.
Record Description Stone cairn with four rocks decorated with cup marks. One cup has a single concentric ring. This cairn was constructed with erratic sandstone boulders many of which are scattered across the limestone summit. Subsequently the cairn has been reduced by quarrying stone for the nearby drystone walls. The cup marked rocks would originally have been concealed within the body of the cairn. Cup marked rocks are frequently (as at the oval How Tallon Cairn on Barningham Moor) incorporated within the body of early bronze age burial cairns and the capstones of early bronze age stone burial cists are occasionally decorated with very complex decoration in the cup and ring style. Neolithic tombs are decorated with 'Passage Grave Art'- a different and earlier form of abstract art based on geometric motifs which include chevrons and spiral decoration.
 Dimensions Not surveyed
Additional Notes The cup marked rocks within the Addlebrough Summit Cairn may have been decorated prir to the construction of the cairn and later moved for incorporation within the cairn. Alternatively, they may have been decorated specifically as an element of the burial ritual.
